A some of a kind edgy millinery specialist

Review of Eugenia Kim

Originality. For most fashion brands, women's hats are just a cut-and-dried addition to their accessories lines. Hats have long lost their erstwhile status as a wardrobe staple they enjoyed a century ago and turned into a mere fixture. Hence, millinery specialist brands have become everything but extinguished species. Eugenia Kim reminds us of the hats glorious past.

Product range. Boaters, fedoras, cloches, blocked berets, sunhats, lacquered caps, buckets, and slouches with wide or narrow brims, ostrich feather poms, mohair ribbons, multicoloured hand-feathered bands, and silver metal flowers. Eugenia Kim puts emphasis on new readings of the hat styles popular in the first half of the XX century. Think Jane March of "The Lover", the young Marlene Dietrich of "The Blue Angel", or Brigitte Bardot photo shoots in her sex-kitten years. Apart from hats proper, Eugenia Kim offers knits like chunky wool beanies and cabled berets, and a small collection of shoes.

Chic. Even though Eugenia Kim's hats are vintage-inspired, they have a distinctly contemporary touch to them, thanks to quirky trimming and colourways.

Pricing. Hats, on average, are available for £150 to £400.

Corporate history highlights. The (possibly apocryphal) story of the brand has it that once upon a time Eugenia Kim shaved her head to fix a disastrous haircut and started to wear hats of her own making. One day, while shopping in Soho, unsuspecting Eugenia turned heads of several fashion boutique owners with her a red guinea-feathered cloche. This started it all for Eugenia Kim's millinery business.
