Childrenswear stores in Moscow in a nutshell
A guide to the best children's clothing stores in Moscow
In most cases one should go no further than stores by well-established mass market retailers. Gap Kids, Zara, H&M, Uniqlo, Next, and the like arguably offer the best value for money, quality- and design-wise. They make scale-down versions of their adult pieces avoiding blatantly obvious solutions like floral and toy car patterns. Kids wearing their pieces look well turned out no matter how basic they essentially are. Add to this, that it would not be much of a regret to throw or give them away when your child grows up.
The most affordable retail chains, however, are completely out of ideas: for some reason they insist on princesses set against pink backdrops for girls, and dinosaur prints as fulfilling every boy's dream. This sin is known to be perfected by both domestic and international brands alike: think Mothercare (UK) or Sela (Russia).
Those of you favouring understated pieces that come in natural colours are well-advised to stop by Petit Bateau, Bonpoint, and Jacadi. Every new season these French brands release breton tops, 'rustic' dresses in pastel shades, denim jumpsuits, solid colour jumpers, that is to say unassuming essentials that live up to what one would expect from a "European" look. However, expect "European" prices as well.
Mamas & Papas stores are most likely to appeal to parents of babies and toddlers: they offer perhaps the cutest baby pieces on the market. The domestic Silver Spoon is a school uniform specialist that fills a badly needed gap on the Russian apparel market. Check United Colors of Benetton's School Collection as well. Outerwear that is truly weatherproof is made by the labels that themselves originate from the Northern hemisphere: Reima is a good case in point. This Finnish company has long been successful as a maker of winter and mid-season down overalls, pants, and jackets. DPAM, a French retail chain, offer a range of affordable T-shirts, tops, and seersucker dresses in all-over colourful prints. The Rookie multi-brand store stocks scaled-down sneakers and athletic shoes by New Balance, Asics, Nike, and Converse.
TSUM is of course the usual suspect when it comes to luxury kids clothing. However, it's Five Kids Store that offers the most hyped products. Since 2013 this Moscow-based concept store has been carrying an array of brands that are otherwise unavailable in Russia but are much sought-after by the moms that believe that nothing but the best will do when it comes to their children. As impressive is the brand array of the domestic Mr. & Miss Little online store. Their buyers are incessantly roaming around the world to get their hands on the most idiosyncratic brands of kids clothing. Also do not underestimate the well-established multi-brand stores catered to adults that nonetheless always stock small batches of items for kids that mostly come from childrenswear collections by the menswear and womenswear labels they offer. Visit KM20, Brandshop, and Aizel just to get an idea.
