Review of Demeter

Product range. The fragrances by Demeter (branded as The Library of Fragrances in the UK and elsewhere in Europe) are the so called single-note fragrances that are drastically different from elaborated fragrance chords that dominate the market. The label offers a comprehensive range of well-known 'true-to-life' scents like jasmine, cinnamon, orange, chocolate and the like. But there's much more to Demeter / The Library of Fragrances than this. The brand built its reputation on one-of-a-kind, if not blatantly shocking, fragrances. There you can try the scents of clean windows, dust, earthworm, funeral home, Irish cream, or glue. All in all over 300 fragrances.

They are available as cologne sprays, shower gels, body lotions, and room sprays. All fragrances are single-note, linear experience fragrances, which means that they do not unfold in time with their sound unchanged as long as you wear them. The fragrances are alcohol-based and use organic corn alcohol; they are also dye-free. Bottle designs are no-frills but this is something to be expected from the fragrances of this price range.

What/how to buy. Almost all fragrances, no matter the concentration, are not long-lasting and fade too fast, so you're recommended to buy a cologne together with a companion oil-based product (this will definitely help you to 'sustain' the sound). The Library of Fragrances / Demeter succeeded in conquering a niche market and avoiding fierce competition thanks to its clever undercutting pricing policy that made similar products by other niche perfume brands way more expensive in comparison.

Pricing. Affordable enough to encourage purchasing several fragrances at once and then creatively blend them in a do-it-yourself fashion. 30 ml cologne spray bottles are available for €20, 8.8ml alcohol-free oil-based roller-balls cost €10, home sprays are about €20, shower gels are €15.

Corporate history highlights. Demeter (The Library of Fragrances) is an American company founded in the mid-1990s. The brand was conceived by Christopher Brosius, an established perfume designer, and his business partner Christopher Gable who collaborated to make affordable niche perfumes. Their maiden line of dust, tomato, and grass fragrances sold well in New York department stores, which fuelled the growth of the company. In 2002, Demeter / The Library of Fragrances founders sold their business to Mark Crames, who's now the CEO and president of the company. The range Demeter / The Library of Fragrances products cover over 300 scents that available in 35 countries worldwide.
